Its the 31st of August 2010, 53 years ago our country was liberated from the British and put under self-governance. Fast forward to today, has our nation, a nation that prides itself as a melting pot of many many cultures and traditions, achieved unity among the races yet?
My view? Not yet. Racial prejudice remains alive in our country. Racial prejudice, I think will never ever vanish in the world. The main thing we need to focus on is to lessen racial prejudice not to abolish it because it can never be done. Take the US as an example, they got their 1st African American president last year in the name of Barack Obama. Yes, racism is better now there than before, but it is still there. What we need in this country is equality. It is always said that all of us have the same privileges, but all of us know that it is not true. We are still a racially polarized nation. Our former PM, Dr Mahathir mentioned recently that the Chinese must not be given strong political positions because the M'sian Chinese are too dominant in the country's economy (here). Not long ago, some M'sian Indians formed a protest group because they felt they were not given good privileges. When will this end? Chinese, Malay, Indian, Kadazan...when will M'sians start calling themselves "Malaysians"? The bumiputras are still given better privileges and are still being treated with bias. I'm truly sorry to all my bumi friends, but this is true. To really make the country united, we have to give everyone equal priviledges. Being biased towards a group of people will spoil them, even Dr Mahathir himself claimed that he failed to make the Malays realise that they have to wake up and not depend on the government anymore.
However, compared to years before. I have started to see changes. Go to the mamak stalls and you can see people of different races cheering for their favourite football team or fellow M'sians together. We can also see more and more interracial relationships nowadays. Things have progressed, and how I hope they will progress further. As the infamous M'sian rapper, Namewee, from Muar, Johor sang "Fuck Racism"(video), we should not view others as Chinese, Malay, Indian etc. but rather as Malaysians. We should not be like the stupid principle, Siti Aishah or whatever she's called. One day in the future I hope to see in my lifetime, maybe a Chinese or Indian PM and citizens that put their trust in a leader of a different race. This has happened in many countries and hopefully M'sia will be one of them.

My Daily Roti Kopitiam - The BENDERA Drama, should we apologise?
Recently there has been this drama unfolding between Malaysia and Indonesia. No. There certainly will not be another confrontation occuring but I do not understand why are the BENDERA (<< lame name..obviously they ran out of ideas) group making a big fuss out of this issue.
So some Indonesian Maritime Officers trespassed our waters and caught some fishermen in OUR waters and they in turn got caught by our officers. They claimed that they got handcuffed by the Malaysian officers. C'mon children, what did you expect? Candy? A hug? You trespassed our waters illegally then of course you're gonna be handcuffed and your making a big fuss out of this? Aww...poor you.
Btw, the fishermen and the Indonesian officers are already returned to their respective countries so forget about it already. There's no use throwing shit at our embassy because that just proves that you're a dumbass. Seriously? Handling your own poo and throwing it at others? Nice move man.
So do I think we should apologise to the BENDERA members? No. You are wrong. We did not demand an apology so why should you behave like small children? Btw...for those that do not read the newspapers, the Indonesian gov has nothing to do with this incident. It's just another protest group that might be paid by someone to throw faeces at our embassy. I believe this is just a small matter and it will just fade away and pass by. So for no we can continue with our normal lives and not worry about another invasion.

My Denim Adventure - Week 2
It's already the second week of trying to break into my raw jeans and god are they hard to be broken into...still no fades...creases have got more permanent though especially at the crotch and behind the knees....they must be incredibly difficult to fade these jeans...will get me thinking twice before purchasing another pair of Dr Denim raws. I might go APC next time. Though more expensive they are much easier to fade. Pics below.
Fyi: Curious to know what a pair of broken in Dr Denims would look like after 22 months of constant wearing? See it here.

I Met Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah.....
's driver today...lol. I have a liking of chatting up taxi or sometimes bus drivers (if they look friendly) as you never know what they know. They seem to know everything that is happening around them and of course it's not all the time that they are right, sometimes our conversations got so interesting I was actually reluctant to go home. So, I was taking my usual shuttle bus ride to Sunway Pyramid today and he was sitting beside me driving the bus. For those that do not know who Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah is, you ignorant people, he's the founder of Sunway. When he drove pass Sunway Tower, he pointed at the black Rolls Royce at the lobby and told me he used to be the Tan Sri's driver and used to drive his cars for him. Being a car insane guy....I immediately felt really interested. I asked him what cars does the Tan Sri have....so he told me 2 Rolls, a Bentley Flying Spur, Jaguar XJ and a Lambo LP640...all of which I have seen parked in front of his office....
He also told me which cars were the best to drive, of course it's not the Rolls. He said it wasn't the Lambo either because you can't see out of it well (it's a supercar lah) but its actually the Bentley. He told me how he used to drive the cars down to Singapore for servicing. Above all, he mentioned that the Tan Sri is a really good man. It was really interesting.
Of course I should've posted this last night but the internet (Jaaaaaring) was dead last night and my landlord still refuses to change to Streamyx. He brought us all back to the Stone Age.

My Daily Roti Kopitiam - MLM for students
Now I read an interesting article on MLMs for students recently on The Star. MLM or Multi-level Marketing is an interesting and very very convincing concept. I'm sure a lot of you might have been approached by MLM-ers to be recruited as part of their team. I'm too lazy to explain how MLMs work but you can try to Wiki it.
This brings back a lot of memories for me...lol. I was one of the "victims". Now, don't get me wrong but I have nothing against MLMs. I have friends that are involved in MLM companies. But one thing's for sure. Not everybody can be the top dog. I can say about 1 in 15 people that have joined these companies succeeded and not many of them succeeded in an...um....honest way. Along the way, you lose friends and you gain friends. I had a fun time doing MLM and have learnt a lot from the experience while doing it but have decided to stop. There's nothing wrong with MLM companies, my advice is if you wanna do it you can give it a try, in fact many of us found it a great learning experience. Along the way you start to see the true colours of the people around you, you start to see who your true friends really are. Along the way, if you think you can do it then do it the right and ethical way. It's not worth it to sacrifice friendship and relationships for money.
Here is TheStar's article on MLMs and direct selling.

I No Understand - The Purpose of Sunglasses
This will be my first "I No Understand" post where I discuss topics mostly in daily habits that I simply do not understand. The hot weather in the Klang Valley today made me realise something...I realised recently that there is a new epidemic that was failed to be noticed by the media or by the health department. People that are infected with this epidemic are most likely displaying symptoms such as walking aimlessly in the mall and “I think I’m so cool” attitude and they can mostly be found not in hospitals but at nightclubs. It’s called the Sunglasses Syndrome.
Lets get serious, I’ve been noticing a “trend” lately that people tend to like to wear sunglasses in places that you do not really need them. Sunglasses, obviously are glasses that are to be worn on sunny days where they protect your eyesight and filter out harmful rays and allows you to see better on a hot sunny day. But I noticed people wearing sunglasses in shopping malls and other buildings where the sunlight is blocked by a roof. I’ve even seen some people wearing sunglasses at nightclubs and at my gym(yes, my gymnasium) someone works out wearing sunglasses.
Why are these people wearing sunglasses in places where you do not need them? The only inference I can make is that think they just look so cool in sunglasses. C’mon, they are actually making themselves look like fools, arses and douchebags. I can’t help but feel annoyed and irritated at this stupid behaviour of theirs. Seriously, I do wear sunglasses but only if the sun is really killing my eyes and not in dark places where I can’t even see with the glasses on (e.g nightclubs). The only way where you can really restore justice is to just take off their sunglasses, give them a tight slap and smash and step on their sunglasses in front of them. Sheesh!
These people are insulting to us wearers of sunglasses. If you have any friends that practise this stupid behaviour please do take the effort to educate them on the proper function and the point of wearing sunglasses. In the mean time, if you have any views on this very serious epidemic, please do feel free to share your views here. =)

My Denim Adventure - 1st week
It's been slightly more than a week since I bought my Dr Denim Raw Jeans last Thursday. In that time I didn't fail to wear them every single day. Heck, I wear them to bed. My roommate at this point must be thinking that he's staying with a madman.
Back to my jeans, not much progress. Creases have started to form but no fades seen yet...they are my 1st pair of raws so I'm not yet an expert in gauging the difficulty of fading them. But if they still look the same after the next 3 weeks they must really be some tough jeans to fade. They did leave some indigo dye on my belts and shoes though...

My Daily Roti Kopitiam - The Dark Side of Pet Ownership in Malaysia
Now if you know me well, I'm not much of a kid person. I have no knowledge on how to hug, cuddle or play with a child. I however do have a soft spot for animals. My whole childhood I've grown up with pets in my household, be it rabbits, guinea pigs, dogs of course, tortoises, fish even insects that I caught. I was lucky to be born into a pet-loving family. We however have less pets now given that we hardly have time to take care of them, so currently we have 3 dogs, 2 mother and daughter guinea pigs (thanks dad for the additional burden =.=) and of course fish.
Now I'm not here to talk about my family. I'm here to talk on pet ownership in Malaysia. What prompted me to write this post was something I saw while lepak-ing at the mall with some friends. There was a pet store at the mall and my friend said to me :" Look how cute is that dog." I took a look and it horrified me, the puppy was barely a month old. Trust me on the age of the puppy, my family have bred dogs numerous times. It's just not nice to see a one month old puppy being on sale. As I've mentioned we have bred dogs and we don't sell or give them away until they are at least 2 months old when they can eat properly and are properly weaned. Pet stores nowadays are not owned by people with love for pets, they are mostly owned by people who just wanna make money. Also, the kennels that produce these puppies, most of them hardly care for their dogs, they too just wanna make a quick buck. Gone were the days where people bred dogs and sold them for the love of it. Nowadays, it's just another "business".
I also wanna talk about new pet owners. I realise that pet ownership, especially dog ownership had started to become a trend especially among the youths in Malaysia. Most of these youths have very little knowledge of what to do with a dog. Leaving a dog in their care is like leaving your child in my care, you wouldn't want it. I've seen many people buying dogs and then giving them away because they find them too much a burden. In fact, one of my dogs was bought from one of these owners. Her previous owner hardly had time to take care of her and she was locked in the store for a whole day sometimes. When she came, her fur was matted and it took us a month to get rid of all the mats. I guess the trauma she experience explains why she is the most troublesome dog we own now, always doing things the opposite way we have taught her to, always making us shout at her, she's enjoying her freedom. Worse still, there are people that buy pets and just abandon them somewhere and expecting them to survive on their own. This is the reason why I don't feel like recommending pets to people nowadays, it'll be like giving them a life sentence.
My advice is, before you decide to buy or own a pet, do some research on it. It may be exciting and fun at first but after a long while you might not feel the excitement anymore. I have a friend that bathes his dog like once every two days and his dog's fur quality is really poor. Even though you think you are giving your pet the best care, you might be doing more harm than expected. It's also better to adopt a pet rather than to buy one. And lastly, be responsible, do not throw or abandon your pets to the dog pound where they'll be killed or somewhere by the roadside or in the jungle. Take good care of your pets, I learnt this the hard way when my sis was away for her studies and left me in charge of her guinea pigs. Of course I did a shit job and when she came back they were in such bad condition all of them died except one which just died not long ago of old age. I felt so bad for what I didn't do that it changed me totally. I'm sure none of you want the same thing happening to you, so think before you do it.

Becky: Shih Tzu, what an I say? Dimwitted and slow. |
Honey: American/English Cocker Spaniel mix, sorry but you can hardly find her in another state other than this. Probably the most obesed dog we have ever had. |

Why is ZARA great? - The Shopping Experience
This will be my 2nd and last post of my "Why is ZARA great?" post series. It will be rather short as you can see below as I'm already feeling a bit uneasy posting about fashion fashion and fashion lately.
In my previous post I talked about how ZARA delivers trendy and nice looking clothes with acceptable quality and reasonable (ok....not so in M'sia) pricing. The other thing I enjoy about shopping at ZARA is the shopping experience itself. Let me compare the shopping experience with one of ZARA's main competitors in M'sia, Topman. No offense to Topman, but MOST of their clothes have shit quality and even their Topman LTD line looks shitty for the price. I do buy essentials like T-shirts at Topman though, so don't hate me.

Lastly, ZARA is also green if you are concerned about polar bears and whales. They use paper bags like premium brands instead of plastic bags. So, there you have it. ZARA is great and if you don't agree with me, explain to me why the founder is in the Top Ten Richest Person list.

My Daily Roti Movie Reviews - The Expendables (2010)
This will be my first My Daily Roti movie review and certainly won't be my last. I don't really consider myself a movie nut as I really really don't enjoy certain movie genres especially horror and torture movies. Anyway, back to topic. Fridays are gloomy now for me, I have to wake up early in the morning to attend lectures and then I have a long 4 hour break before my damn 3 hour Biology lab session. So today I decided to go watch a movie with woman. Recently I have not been following movies as I did when I was in high school, but when I saw "The Expendables" was directed by none other than Mr. Rambo, Sylvester Stallone himself with a cameo appearance of Arnold "I'm fat" Schwarzenegger and with a list of many many action movie stars (even the damn Stone Cold Steve Austin himself), I couldn't help but watch it.
So......lotsa gore and blood and explosions and people being blowned up, throats slashed, knives, guns, bombs and violence with a sense of humour. Not the best special effects or the best plot ever. For god's sake it's a Sylvester Stallone movie! What did you expect? Love? Snuggles? Titanic? Of course not.
Not the best movie ever but it's a movie that you will watch for laughs and giggles rather than for the plot. Enjoyable and fun. =)
My Roti Rating: 6/10 (warm but not crispy)
Why is ZARA great? - The Products
Finally I have got enough time to post my first of two "Why is ZARA great?" installments as promised. Now, if you do not know, ZARA is a fast fashion retailer, probably the first in the world. Basically what the founder did when he opened his first ZARA store many years ago was selling self made clothes "inspired" by the trends set by the designer big boys at a fraction of the price of the item in which he drew inspiration from. This idea was soon copied by other companies such as Topman/Topshop and also the famed H&M. So, what makes ZARA stand out from the others?
Basically, ZARA does the same as the other companies but I think the quality of their products are significantly better than that of rival companies such as H&M and MNG. Sure, they are sometimes more expensive but they do deliver in quality. Being a fast fashion retailer, ZARA is always up to the newest trends. They are different from the others because they actually make some of their special, trendy items in their self owned factory while others will choose to outsource production to factories in China and such. This actually gives a huge advantage to ZARA as if one product is found to be unpopular, they can tweak the design, make the newly designed product and put it on shelves for sale in a matter of 2 weeks! The latest of trends without burning a hole in your pocket, that's what makes ZARA stand out from the others.
Below are some examples of ZARA taking "inspiration" from other brands...enjoy. =)

My First Pair of Raw Denim =)
Swede brand Dr Denim Jeansmakers |
As we all know trousers do crumple up and get wrinkles here and there when we wear them for a while. The special thing about raw denim is that as you wear them for a long...and I mean really long time, the places that crumple up and wrinkle up gradually fades in colour due to the dye being disturbed. After a long long while, wrinkles will form and become more and more detailed. Since all of us have different body shapes and sizes, the pair of denim will crumple up at different places, so what turns out are more natural fades. The important thing is that to get beautiful fades you have to wear them for AT LEAST 6 months without washing (if you wash, the starch and colour will be washed off and makes the jeans harder to fade), and if you can, better results for 1 year without washing. Fortunately, you can dry clean them.
So...the result of all this hard work is a pair of jeans that literally is made for you by you. Nobody will have the same pair, same fades, same wrinkles. Think of it as a custom made pair of jeans for yourself. My raw denim adventure begins. Will update every month on the fades...hopefully. =)

Why is ZARA great? - My Intro
Now, being a guy, I'll have to admit that I am quite interested in fashion and I do generally sometimes try to follow trends. I know that fashion is generally a feminine thing, but hell...it's the 21st century. At least I have not gone to the extent of wearing stupid jewelry, wearing clothes that are too big for myself, stupid piercings here and there or carrying a bag on my shoulders (yes...I have seen many stupid teens do that).

What pulverized my feet..
My feet feel like they've been rubbed on a cheese grater. That's because I went on a field trip today. Don't ask me why...it's for one of my courses (Environmental Science). Basically what we needed to do was to go to 3 different types of habitats to sample the stuff living there.
Took a bus as usual, first we went to some shithole (quite literally) pond at Kelana Jaya. I didn't bring my cam down there so no pics for that place. It was quite lifeless anyway, just a few bugs, larvae and some apple snails. Interestingly, as ugly as apple snails look, they do produce some interesting looking pink eggs which will look like chewing gum sticking on the sides of anything they stick to.
Some fungi. |
Later we went to some forest in Gombak. Forest was boring....trees, leeches and dead leaves. No tigers (they do exist there) or any other big animals around. But then we went down to a stream to collect samples. I imagined pristine rivers were sandy and nice. I was wrong, it was like walking on needles. Hence, I currently have a very uncomfortable feeling on my feet. But it was interesting though. No talking needed...pics will speak for themselves below...

For those that do not know, he is here for his concert Aug 5th Sunway Lagoon. Fuckin cool! Excuse my use of language...I'm excited...by music! Ironic...=)
Might look small but I can totally see it clearly and hear it clearer. =) |

My Strained Relationship with Music
Now...if you were my friend and you happen to know me quite well, you would also know that I am a complete imbecile when it comes to music. Just to let you know the degree of my stupidity when it comes to music, I honestly don't know the definition of blues or pop or any of those stuff.
If you have been with me to a karaoke session you would see that I can go completely berserk but it's only because I like to shout and make noise. Also, to hide my shallow knowledge of music I always try to act lazy during karaoke sessions so my friends would choose the songs for me (actually I don't really know how to use to remote controller as well).
Anyway, I have this friend whose absolutely crazy about music whose name I would not mention but lets call him Brandon SM (No it doesn't stand for anything sexual you dirty minds). SM claims that he would die without music and that I am the first person he has ever met that never listens to music.
Well, actually he is partly not true. I used to listen to music a lot. I used to watch MTV to look out for what nice new songs are out and I used to listen to rap and rap listening to it which drives my brother absolutely bonkers. My song list used to be a big list but you would laugh looking at the current one. It's absolutely pathetic that I don't listen to music. Nowadays my relationship with music is down to turning on the radio while driving and I don't even know the names of the songs that are played.
Honestly I don't know why I lost my love for it. At the peak of my knowledge for music everything musical around me just went off. My song list was gone because my com died, my MTV got off my Astro subscription for some reason. I just didn't bother to take the hassle to download songs anymore and I just didn't felt like I needed them. Also, music, I think is in a grey patch now. There's just too much shit playing on the radio nowadays. There's someone with a ridiculous name with a humongous nose on her horse-like face wearing a red g-string and suspenders singing some ridiculous song. Guns n' Roses sucks now. There are also people like Kesha, who sings about how much men want her and how hot she is when she isn't? There are also big black men that talk with music in the background about drugs and sex and how many times they've been shot. And, I don't bother to switch to chinese or asian stations because all they sing about is love and breaking up.
Music had lost it's greats and in the place of them comes a lot of people who sing for the sake of money rather than for the love of it. This is probably one of the reasons that I lost my love for music. Until another Elvis or MJ comes about, I will probably not find the need for modern music in my life. But if you guys fancy a karaoke session and don't mind me shouting, shrieking and climbing up the seats I'm always available. =) (I also apologise for the images to be in BnW, I didn't take it...my friend did)
If you have been with me to a karaoke session you would see that I can go completely berserk but it's only because I like to shout and make noise.

All done..=)
It's 2.00 am already on a Wednesday and I am finally done with my blog designing. I hope it doesn't turn out to be an awful sight but I do have to agree that it's abit...grey. However, I'm rather satisfied with the designs and the background and shit. I spent almost half a day drawing everything on some online photoshop-like-thingy and I'm rather happy with how well they turned out (of course if they didn't turned out as well as I wanted I would've killed myself). Classes classes tommorow, I hope I will return soon to begin my new blogging adventure. Cheers!

Popped the blog cherry
Finally, I have become part of the blogosphere. I have been thinking about blogging and sharing my views on daily M'sian life for a long time. However, being typically Malaysian I will always tell myself "tommorow lah" or "next time lah". But bad habits like that have to be mended, and here I am blogging finally. Actually, I had tried to blog back when blogging was only starting to become a huge trend....it ended up as an immense failure so I'm not going to mention about that =).
Details about myself, the name is Chua K.Z. and I was born on April 8th 1991. I guess that's enough details...so let me tell you the purpose of my blog. Well, I created this blog really to share with everybody anything under the sky that I can think of with particular interests on Malaysian lifestyle. Well, that will be all for now and I will try to update my blog more often once I get used to designing and all the geeky blogging stuff.
